Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 18

Today I am grateful for my ward family.  How grateful I am that even though I wasn't able to bring anything to the potluck they didn't care, they were just happy we were there.  I'm so happy that when we go to these functions that each member of our family has friends they can talk with and enjoy their time.  It was a fun way to start our weekend and end our stressful week.

On a side note we left when clean up was almost done due to Allie trying to break her nose.  She had been running after a friend who stopped short.  Allie didn't stop and plowed into his back with her nose.  She was brought to me with a bloody nose.  Once I got that taken care of I noticed her nose was swelling a bit.  We got some ice and headed home.  It doesn't look too bad and she isn't complaining about it except when I touch it, so it is probably just bruised.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 17

Today I'm grateful for good books.  Each night that Russ has been gone I've stayed up late tiring myself out by reading.  I've been reading some very intriguing books lately that have made it a cinch staying up late.  Without these books there is no way I would have made it through this week!

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 16

Today I'm grateful for my car.  How grateful I am that I am not stranded at home with the girls when Russ goes off and works so far away.  With all the trips to doctors we have made recently I have realized just how important it is that have a second car in order to get there.  I feel very blessed that we have that second car when I know so many people that don't have that luxury.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 15

Today I am grateful for a doctor who listened.

Back on November 4th I took Allie into the doctor because it was Friday and she had a fever and was also very tired.  I didn't want go into the weekend with her having that.  We saw the nurse practitioner.  As soon as she walked in the door she said, "oh she has strep"  She inspected her further and said she had large red splotchy tonsils and pointed out a rash to me that I hadn't noticed.  I thought Allie was just flushed from the fever.  The doctor put her on a medicine that she had given her before and we were on our way.  Friday night Allie took her medicine and went to bed early.  On a side note, Russ ended up taking Lily to the Urgent Care that night because she came home from school with pink eye.  Two highly contagious diseases in one house is NOT fun to keep contained....just so you know!

Saturday came and Allie improved.  Her fever and rash were gone.   She still acted very tired and didn't want to eat, but for the most part she acted fine.  Sunday morning arrived, Allie refused to eat breakfast but wanted water.  She drank a small bit and immediately began throwing up.  I started to clean her up and I noticed she felt warm.  I banished Allie to the couch saying she must rest on it.  By afternoon Allie's fever was back as was the rash.  Except this time the rash was very noticeable and worse in my opinion.

8:30 Monday morning I called the doctors for another appointment.  I described to the nurse what was going on and she insisted that I not come in.  She would talk to the doctor about her worsening condition and call back with instructions on how to take of her.  When I hadn't heard back from them at 2:30 I called in and demanded answers.  The nurse blew some smoke about "how busy they were" which just made me more mad.  Eventually she got around to asking how Allie was doing now.  Allie had fell asleep at 11:00 and was still sleeping.  She also hadn't ate anything again.  I explained this{again} and she said she would get back to me.  Ten minutes later he did get back to me saying Allie's medicine was being switched.

Monday night Allie took her medicine.  Tuesday and Wednesday the fever and rash were gone, but Allie still wasn't eating nor drinking.  She was sleeping much more than normal and she wasn't going to the bathroom.  Thursday the rash showed up briefly and then was gone.  I was getting nervous by this time.  Friday night we went to McDonald's and I was FOR SURE Allie would eat since she was showing a bit more normalcy.  Half way through her meal Allie layed down on the bench declaring she was cold and her tummy hurt.  I turned and looked her and my mouth about hit the table I was in such shock.  Allie was covered head to toe in another rash that was clearly an allergic reaction of some sort.  I felt her head and she had a slight fever....again.

We waited out the weekend with the rash coming and going.  Monday I called in I was on hold for over an hour before finally  low and behold I got the SAME nurse as last time.  I started crying when she said that all appointments were full.  I said what should I do then.  She reassured me that Allie would be fine as long as she was taking in some water.  She did say that it sounded like mono and I agreed with her because I had already looked it up online and all the symptoms for mono were the symptoms Allie was having.  I got an appointment for today and waited with the rash appearing faintly again.  However, her energy level and appetite had seemed to perk up a little.

Today I went in and talked to our normal physician.  Allie was acting quite normal today other than a very faint rash.  Dr. H listened so patiently as I laid out the whole story before him.  Which in itself was very complicated.  He gave Allie a complete exam and then laid out what he thought had happened.  From the swollen tonsils that Allie still had and the rash I described the PA had shown me he said she probably had had Scarlet Fever {strep with a rash}.  Her tonsils were still quote swollen {a 2.5} and they were close to being a candidate for seeing a ETN.  But he reassured me that they probably would go down in the next week or two.  He then proceeded to say that Allie was  allergic to the first antibiotic{suprax aka Cefixime aka cephalosporin antibiotic} and that it was an odd choice for the PA to give her since it doesn't really treat strep.  He was very intrigued when I related that Lily was allergic to it as well.  He declared that was a very ominous family history.  Then we got to the heart of the situation.  He was very concerned to here that we were still giving all the 2nd antibiotic because it was only 5 day dose.  Our bottle had said a 10 day dose.  He felt that the combination of so many antibiotics in her, her 2nd antibiotic going to long, and the combination of being allergic to the first one was leading to her body react against them causing the rash.  He felt by taking her off the medicine the rash should go away.  He was more concerned that Allie's body may have created a resistance to the zythromax.  Zythromax is pretty much her only option right now for an antibiotic.  He told me to make sure she doesn't get sick for a long time.  Yeah, like that is going to happen!  Before he left he did say to me that he was going to talk to not only the PA about the dosage problem but he was going to talk to the nurse as well about not letting me come in TWICE when I needed to.  He declared that wasn't the way things should be handled.

All day today I have seen continual improvement of Allie.  I'm so glad that I have a doctor who took the time to listen and get the heart of what was wrong.  I shudder to think of what kind of predicament we would be in if we had continued to give Allie the medicine and she built up a resistance to it.

Oh and on a sidenote, Lily came home from school with fever.  It never ends, I swear!  At least I know she doesn't have strep since she doesn't have her tonsils anymore : )

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 14

Today I'm thankful for my talents.  For the first time in about five months i sat down and created something for a CT assignment.  It felt wonderful to use my hands and work with the glue and paper to produce something lovely.  Sometimes I get down on myself that my talents are just okay, but everyone is better than me at them.  Today was one of those days that I pushed those insecurities aside and said, "Yes I have been blessed with a talent, and I so happy Heavenly Father blessed me with it!"

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 13

I'm grateful for Russ's job today.  A few months ago we went through a time where we were not sure if Russ would have a job.  Things were collapsing on his project and Russ wasn't 100% sure the company would be able to reassign him to a different project.  After some very stressful time Russ was reassigned and we breathed a sigh of relief.  Every day since then I have thanked Heavenly Father that Russ has his job.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 12

My parents who taught me to work hard.  The house was a mess again today, and I've noticed that having it clean for Sunday is a big relief to me.  So the girls and I worked, and worked, and worked to get it all clean.  As we worked together I thought about how nice it was to work side by side with the girls instead of me cleaning up after them.  Lily asked me why they had to work so hard.  I patiently explained so we could do fun things, and have a nice clean home.  She didn't seem completely satisfied with that, but I know if we keep working side by side to clean things she will learn to enjoy a clean house, just like a learned from my parents.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 11

I am grateful for my grandfather today.  I'm grateful that he had the courage to leave his home and travel not just to some new area but to a whole new continent into enemy territory.  My grandpa fought in WWII.  He didn't talk about it much.  Occasionally he would relate a story but for the most part he kept his experiences to himself.  Even so I will never be more grateful that he was willing to fight for our country.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 10

Food storage.  Yep today I am grateful for food storage.  In the past two weeks or so I have had the great opportunity to gather quite a bit of food storage for our family.  I was able to get 40 lbs of chicken breast, 20ish cans of chicken broth, 20 cans of green beans, 20 cans of corn, and 5 cans of Cream of Mushroom.  The part I'm most grateful for is that I was able to get all of this for much cheaper than I normally would!

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 9

I am grateful for the scriptures today.  Charlotte hasn't been adjusting well to the time change, so I've been up every morning at 5:30 with her.  Most morning I have struggled to get her to back to sleep, which just turns into a battle of wills that she wins.  This morning I took a different approach.  I just let her get up and play while I sat and read my scriptures.  I've been lacking in the scripture reading department for awhile now.  Today even though I was struggling to keep my eyes open I read through my scriptures.  You know what happened?  I had the most peaceful day I've had in months!  It was glorious and as I reflect back on it, I know that I can owe it to starting out my day right!

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 8

What a tough day for thankfulness.  We received some awful news today.  We learned earlier that our newest nephew was born today.  However, he isn't doing well at all.  We also found out that Russell's cousin died leaving behind a wife and son.  He was only 34.  As this horrible news rolled in I quickly said a prayer for everyone involved.  I began to think on this tonight and realized that my grateful post today is that I am grateful for my family and my extended family.  I'm blessed with wonderful members of my family and they all have a special place in my heart.  I'm grateful that Heavenly Father saw fit to bless me with them.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 7

Long, horrible day!  Which is why I'm so grateful that today of all days was the day a bit of my patience came back.  My patience has been MIA for a few months lately, but it made a brief appearance today when it was needed most.  It ran from being patient with nurses who wouldn't listen, to being patient and dealing with a sick child who cannot cooperate when sick.  Heavenly Father must have known that today was the day I needed my patience back and I'm glad he blessed me with that small mercy.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 6

Today I'm thankful for little comfort items.  Whether it be warm soup on a chilly day, a blankie and monkey to snuggle with when sick, or a paci to soothe aching gums, I'm grateful for them all!

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 5

Today I am grateful for trials.  Today we had nice Stake Relief  Society activity where the Stake President reminded us to be grateful for our trials.  He explained that by being grateful for them and bearing them well, will make us a happier person.  He also reminded us not to murmur about our trials.  This was a perfect talk for me today.  It reminded me of so many things I can do to feel better.  I'm grateful that the Lord places leaders amidst us to help else when needed, and remind us that our trials are but for a moment and if we endure them well we will be blessed.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 4

Modern Medicine.  I am SUPER thankful for modern medicine today.  Having both Lily and Allie come down with highly contagious illnesses today as made me realized how blessed I am that I can give them some medicine that within 24 hours they'll be almost no traces that they were ever sick.  Not only that but since they will have such a speedy recover there will be less of a chance that Charlotte will catch either of these illnesses.  That in itself is something to be grateful for!

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 3

I'm thankful for my husband...who loves me despite my faults.  Who loves me even when I have called him three different times to ask him something important and all three times I have forgotten what it was.  Who loves my children and makes it a point to read each of them a book and the scriptures every night.  Who works extra long hours to provide for our little family.  I could go on and on, but really I am thankful that I have him. Love ya honey!

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 2

Today I'm thankful for friends.  Taking Allie to playgroup I wondered why I was going.  I usually sit there and listen but rarely am I involved in conversations.  I reminded myself that it was good for Allie to get out and exercise, and play with friends.  We rang the doorbell and we were welcomed in with excited cries of "You're here!  We were waiting for you!"  Quickly I was whisked into conversation after conversation.  I found myself delighted to be there and happy to have some friends to laugh and talk with.

Thankful Thirty Days -- Day 1

Today I am thankful for the warm sun and feeling of fall.  I miss the changing of seasons here in Texas, but today it almost felt like a crisp cool fall day in Utah.  I threw open the blinds and let the warm soon filter into our slightly chilly house.  The girls took naps while I worked at our desk near the window.  I looked out the window and was surprised to see our beautiful green tree instead of the orange, red, and yellow leaves.  I smiled to myself and the thought ran through my mind, "Only in Texas do you have a GREEN fall".  This time though that thought didn't leave me homesick but at ease with a happy heart.
